After two decades of inspiring young artists and nurturing creativity, Meghan Purcell is profoundly honored to be recognized as Iowa's Outstanding Elementary Art Educator of the Year. Meghan, who has dedicated the past 15 years to Bettendorf Community School, currently shares her creative passion between Mark Twain and Herbert Hoover Elementary Schools. Prior to teaching in Bettendorf Meghan taught Elementary Art in Clinton, Iowa. A true advocate for art education, Meghan is on track to complete her Master of Art Education Degree at The Art of Education University by Fall 2024, following her graduation from St. Ambrose University with a BFA in Fine Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design, and a minor in Art History.
Beyond her classroom duties, Meghan's contributions to her district are extensive. She has served as a teacher mentor, lead for elementary curriculum writing, and as a member of the Elementary PBIS team, Student Success Team, Behavior Support Team, and Building Student Council Coordinator. She has also helped facilitate various art shows throughout the Quad City area. Her dedication extends to the PTA, where she has held roles including Parent-Teacher Liaison and Vice President. Meghan's commitment to excellence has been recognized with her district’s Employee of the Quarter award and the National Artsonia Educational Leadership Award.
With a deep commitment to the art education field, Meghan actively engages with the National Art Education Association. She has attended six national conventions and had the honor to present workshops on curriculum design and on bookmaking techniques at the 2024 NAEA Conference in Minneapolis. Her regional involvement includes sharing insights on Elementary Bookmaking Techniques in 2022 and presenting about curriculum development at this year’s state conferences.
Meghan Purcell’s mission as an art educator is to bridge academic learning with real-life experiences through the transformative power of art. She is dedicated to demonstrating how art enhances understanding and retention in core subjects like math, science, social studies, and literacy, especially in an education climate that often prioritizes math and reading. Meghan believes that art fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and meaningful connections to the world. Her teaching, guided by national art standards, emphasizes exploring art elements, building self-esteem, and empowering students to embrace their unique talents. Meghan aims to help students exceed their expectations and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their world, promoting self-sufficiency and academic and emotional support. Her unwavering dedication and passion for art education continue to inspire both students and colleagues, nurturing artistic potential and fostering a lifelong love of learning.
